Firewise in the Forest:
A community demonstration garden

Station One features Firewise in the Forest, a public garden that shows how to landscape your home for fire safety.

Open daily at no charge, the garden offers examples of low-volatility plants, fuel-reduction principles, and smart design strategies for forested properties.

The trees, shrubs, and perennials showcased here survive fire by their own protective mechanisms, such as thick bark (mature Ponderosa pine), or by resprouting (aspens, native grasses, and many native shrubs).

Firewise in the Forest was designed by Black Forest's High Altitude Garden Club, funded by the Black Forest Fire Rescue Protection District, and built in 2004 by 135 community and fire department volunteers.
