Visit the El Paso County Assessor’s Office and search for your address. Under Taxing Entities, look for the fire department. If it says Black Forest Fire Rescue, the property is in our district.
ISO fire rating
Black Forest has an ISO Fire Rating of 5 within the entire protection district. If a home is within 1,000 feet of a working hydrant, the ISO Fire Rating is 4.
Staffing and response
- Department staffing: 24 career firefighters, 2 single-role paramedics, 1 financial officer, 1 Wildland Mitigation Division Supervisor, 1 part-time support services coordinator, 1 part-time emergency vehicle technician, and a small contingent of volunteer EMS personnel.
- Shifts: Three rotating 24-hour shifts with 8 firefighters per shift.
- Average response time: 8.77 minutes within the district.
- Average initial response: 8 firefighters and 1 command-level officer. Automatic aid partners provide an additional 8–10 firefighters and 1–2 command-level officers. Additional personnel and apparatus are requested through mutual aid as needed.
Structure fire response and water supply
The initial response to a structure fire includes 2 engines, 1 tender, and a command officer. Each engine carries 750 gallons of water and has a 1,500 gpm pump. The tender provides an additional 2,000 gallons. This response provides a fire flow of 250 gpm for the first 10 minutes.
Automatic aid from neighboring agencies can provide an additional 2 engines (1,000 gal) and 2 tenders (4,000 gal), providing an additional fire flow of 250 gpm for 16 minutes, until a hauled water shuttle system is established and a continuous hauled water supply can be achieved.
Hauled water is BFFR’s primary firefighting water source. Water is supplied through firefighting cisterns, dry hydrants in ponds, and the district’s limited hydrant system.
